The Seaboard Voyager, the first vessel in the series, entered service in November 2024, followed by the Seaboard Victory, which began operations this month. The fleet expansion is part of a broader industry trend among U.S. carriers embracing LNG technology for its environmental benefits and fuel efficiency. Companies such as TOTE, Pasha, and Matson have also adopted LNG-powered vessels, showcasing the industry's shift towards sustainable shipping.
Innovative Design and Technology
The V-Class vessels, designed by HB Hunte of Germany and built by China’s Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering Company, are equipped with cutting-edge features. Among the most notable innovations are:
Classed by DNV, the vessels are reported to have a design speed of 19.5 knots and are equipped with two diesel generators and one LNG generator. Each ship boasts a capacity of 3,500 TEU, including over 1,000 reefer plugs, making them versatile for various cargo requirements.
Seaboard Victory's Milestone Entry
Seaboard Victory recently completed its maiden port calls in Callao and Pisco, Peru, marking a significant milestone for the company. As the second vessel in the V-Class series, it underscores Seaboard Marine’s dedication to enhancing sustainability and service quality.
Eddie Gonzalez, President and CEO of Seaboard Marine, stated, “The Seaboard Victory marks an exciting milestone as the second ship in our cutting-edge V-Class series and the second of eight new LNG-powered ships transforming our fleet. Its arrival reflects our dedication to sustainability and delivering exceptional service to our customers.”
Seaboard Marine began its LNG journey in 2023 with the acquisition of Seaboard Blue, previously known as Elbblue. Originally built in 2011, the vessel was retrofitted in 2017 for LNG operations and has a capacity of 1,000 TEU. Seaboard Blue also made history as the first LNG-fueled containership to bunker at PortMiami before sailing to Honduras and Guatemala.
With eight LNG-powered vessels anticipated by the end of 2025, Seaboard Marine is contributing to the growing adoption of LNG in the shipping industry. According to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight database, LNG-fueled containerships currently represent the largest segment of LNG-powered vessels, with 127 in operation and 314 on order. By 2028, over 400 LNG-fueled containerships are expected to be in service.
Seaboard Marine’s forward-thinking approach not only positions it as a leader in sustainable shipping but also reflects the broader industry's commitment to greener, more efficient maritime operations.
